Today's headlines Netflix to pay more UK tax The streaming giant will start declaring the £1 billion-plus revenues it gets from British customers each year to HMRC. In 2018 the company declared £43 million in UK revenues, despite making £700m from subscribers. The move will see Netflix stop funnelling revenue from the UK through its European HQ in the Netherlands. UK's Huawei ban sped up Students fined £170,000 for coronavirus rule breaking Up to November 12, UK universities had fined 1,898 students a combined total of £170,915 for breaking coronavirus rules. The University of Nottingham has issued the highest amount in fines, with 91 students paying a total of £58,865 for flouting household mixing and social distancing rules. Violent gang culture videos are going viral on TikTok In 2019, 34,582 murders were recorded in Mexico and this year the number is set to be higher. The New York Times reports on how cartel culture – including its violence, drugs and guns – is going viral on TikTok and glamorising the lifestyle.
What we're reading Innocent victims are often caught in the crossfire. In many cases residents must lie on the floor or create barricades to hide from stray bullets as they wait for a truce. In 2019, Rio saw an average of 20 shootings a day. Things have cooled slightly since the pandemic began, but there was still an average of 14 shootings every day up until the end of June. Around 1,500 people are shot dead in Rio's metropolitan area every year.
