Final Fantasy XV's director is making the first-ever Paralympics video game

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata unexpectedly left Square Enix five months ago, citing "a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge." Now that project has been revealed, and no-one could ever have guessed what it would be. Developed by Tabata's new studio JP Games, The Pegasus Dream Tour is a fantasy sports RPG that also happens to be the first-ever officially licensed Paralympics video game.

The Pegasus Dream Tour sees players awakening special abilities to take part in an alternate version of the Paralympic Games set in a fictional metropolis called Pegasus City. The project is designed to raise interest in Paralympic sport ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Take-Two dropped its lawsuit over Red Dead Redemption 2's Pinkerton agents

A lawsuit over Red Dead Redemption 2's Wild West Pinkerton agents is ending quietly, with publisher Take-Two Interactive and developer Rockstar Games dismissing a defensive complaint against the modern-day Pinkerton agency.

Take-Two and its subsidiary Rockstar filed the suit in January, striking back at a cease-and-desist notice from Pinkerton, which argued Red Dead Redemption 2 had infringed on its trademark. The publisher wanted a court to rule that its use of the Pinkerton name — as part of a game that emphasizes historical accuracy — was fair use. But GameDaily.biz notes that the suit was dropped today, apparently ending the dispute.

The Pinkerton National Detective Agency is a staple of Western fiction, reflecting its real role in...

Falcon Age is a game about cute birds and fighting colonialism

Like many game designers, Chandana Ekanayake keeps a big document full of potential concepts, one that he keeps updating as ideas come to him. One that's stuck around is the concept of being a falconer: having a bird that you could train and care for, while working together to solve problems. "I thought the whole idea of having a falcon as a mechanic might be interesting," he says.

So when Ekanayake formed Outerloop Games, and began exploring ideas for the studio's first game, the bird concept came up early. He put together a scrappy prototype using premade assets, and was struck by the sensation of watching the bird fly off, only to come back and rest on your arm when you call it. The effect was particularly pronounced in virtual...

Acer's new Predator Helios 700 gaming laptop has a transforming keyboard and trackpad

Acer just announced its latest gaming laptop, the Predator Helios 700. It looks like a larger version of the company's Predator Helios 300 model, with an updated design. The keyboard and trackpad actually slide forward toward the user, and the trackpad tilts down to form a palm rest.

The keyboard is obviously the star of the show here. Acer calls it the "HyperDrift keyboard," and it's not just a cosmetic change, either: sliding the keys forward exposes fans underneath that improve cooling and performance. The keys are a new type of "MagForce keys" with linear switches, which Acer says are more precise than traditional models.

The Helios 700 is being billed as the new flagship of the Helios line for Acer, with a 17.3-inch 1080p display,...

You can test-drive ray tracing on your GTX graphics card with Nvidia's latest driver

Nvidia has released a new driver that allows ray tracing effects to be switched on in GeForce GTX 10- and 16-series graphics cards, such as the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1660. Ray tracing is a resource-intensive feature that makes rendering lighting, shadows, and reflections in real time look more realistic — and thanks to new DirectX Raytracing (DXR) support, you'll be able to test it out with the painfully small batch of games that have actually adopted ray tracing. That currently includes Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Battlefield V, and Metro: Exodus (we're eagerly awaiting more).

If you don't have those games — or hey, if they're old news for you and you'd rather not reinstall them — Nvidia is also offering a few new tech demos that you can...
