WIRED Awake November 30: Nasa announces a new commercial Moon programme

Nasa is going back to the Moon and, in a major step towards realising that, it's announced nine firms that will bid to deliver science and technology payloads to Earth's natural satellite (Ars Technica).

The companies include Lockheed Martin Space, Moon Express, the Orbit Beyond consortium and the not-for-profit Draper Laboratory. Initial payloads are likely to consist of equipment to assess the conditions and potential of different lunar regions as part of the US's plans for the commercial exploitation of the Moon's natural resources.

Staff of Korean firm Toptec Co, including the chief executive, have been charged over the alleged leaking of Samsung's proprietary flexible OLED display technology to a Chinese company (WIRED). Toptec denies the charges, which say that it received over $13.8 million from the unnamed Chinese firm.

The Chinese government has stepped in to halt a research project that has used CRISPR gene editing technology in an attempt to create babies with HIV immunity (Associated Press). Chinese vice minister of science and technology Xu Nanping said that the team's actions "crossed the line of morality and ethics adhered to by the academic community and was shocking and unacceptable" and that an investigation had been ordered.

In 2019, the UK will be host to the world's largest trial of electric vehicles (WIRED). It has a humble aim: to work out all the myriad of ways in which we are hopelessly unprepared to ditch the internal combustion engine once and for all.

Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, and Alcon Entertainment has announced that they will be producing a new anime series called Blade Runner – Black Lotus (The Verge). Directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and with Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe as creative producer, it's set 17 years before the Blade Runner 2049 feature film and will include some existing characters.
