Excerpts:

Nintendo needs a heck of a holiday season to meet Switch sales goal

Nintendo has announced that it sold 3.19 million Switch consoles last quarter, meaning it's at 5.07 million units for the financial year so far and 22.86 million since its launch in March 2017. That's right, folks, the Switch has now outsold the GameCube's 21.74 million total as well as the Wii U.

The home/portable hybrid console has been a big success, but Nintendo does have an uphill climb if it's going to meet its own optimistic sales target of 20 million for the year ending March 31st, which remains unchanged. The current holiday quarter will be by far the most important, and last year Nintendo "only" moved 7.23 million units. The company will likely have to almost double that to meet its goals, given that the quarter following the...

Red Dead Redemption 2 horse riding fails are tragically funny

In Red Dead Redemption 2 you pretty much have to care about your horse: not only can you bond with your steed, your ride can also permanently die. Given that horses are your main mode of transportation, you're probably going to end up caring about your galloping pal. And with this being a Rockstar game, the physics are a show onto themselves, too.

You see where this is going, right? Horse riding wipes were inevitable in RDR2, but this time around, the game comes with a "cinematic mode" that distances the camera and adds black bar borders. Cinematic mode is a great way to take on the sights, but the problem is that it can ironically shroud your vision, making it impossible to steer clear of obstacles. Then again, even small things like...

No Man's Sky underwater update adds sea monsters and submarines

The next major update in No Man's Sky is focused on underwater life. Developer Hello Games detailed the exploration game's newest expansion, called "The Abyss," which is launching today on all platforms. "The Abyss" appears to add significantly to what players can expect from the game's already vast but sometimes empty alien oceans, and it also continues to flesh out No Man's Sky's growing horror elements.

The biggest change is the sheer amount of variety that's being added to aquatic biomes. "Underwater creatures have become more frequent, and more interesting," Hello explains. "Aquatic life inhabits the full depth of the ocean, and unique terrifying creatures can be encountered on the ocean floor." There will be new sunken wrecks to...

Early WiiMote prototype emerges with wires that let it plug into a GameCube

The prototype includes the Wii Remote, Nunchuck and sensor bar.

The Wii was a console best known for its unusual "WiiMote" controller, which used an approachable TV remote form-factor and motion-controls to entice families worldwide to play endless amounts of Wii Tennis. Now, an early prototype for this controller has been sold at auction in Japan, reports Polygon.

Although there are superficial similarities, the prototype controller is a very different beast to what was eventually released alongside the Wii. For starters, it's designed to be plugged into Nintendo's previous console, the GameCube, which means it has to be hooked up with wires rather than connecting over Bluetooth. The remote plugs into one of the console's standard controller ports, while the Nunchuck component then plugs into the...
